April 2012 Update

April 2, 2012 in Uncategorized

Wow. Its been a long time Since I’ve last posted here. I’ve been busy between working, going to School, and other projects. I didn’t forget about you guys though. Thats something I would never do. I’m just starting to get back into the blog business after all of that craziness and I’m working on fitting this around my still ever slightly busy schedule. First things first, this is my April’s update. For April fools day I got punk’d by popping balloons at work. They would not stop popping. We inflate new one and they would pop too. Guess the Spirit of Party City likes April first as well.

Now that we are back in order of business. Allow me to explain what I will be doing for the next 4 weeks. I will still be busy working and attending school but school is starting to wrap up and I should be getting more free time. During the off times I will be trying to fit in more blog posts, new, updates, and other stuff that I put online. I will also be looking for new want-to-be blogger that don’t want to pay to have a site but would like to start out in the world. This is great for you starters who can’t get into other blog sites. You will be given a subscriber status when you sign up and say you want to blog post by posting in the forums in Geekunity.

Next up for my update is about video blogs. I will be restarting Week In Review. Something that I haven’t actually done in a while. My goodness. its been what? Since February that I’ve last posted a video? I’m also hoping to be able to do so review videos, but that largely depends on if there are sponsors willing to let me have an item to review. News updates are in the near future and we hope to turn around this empty hollowed halls. We really hope that you guys enjoy all the upcoming videos. Also sponsorship’s and donations are greatly appreciated.

You all probably know by now that we have a minecraft server since March 6, 2012. Throughout last month a lot of you have noticed that the server went under numerous amount of down times and changes. I would like to greatly announce that the down times are now less of and issue. We also upgraded the server ram thus allowing up to add more user slots. We now allow up to 24 Users instead of 6. I don’t see us getting near 24 users that quickly. If we do that I will just add more ram to the server again and increase the user count. Also, please help us cover the cost of running this server by donating to us. Email Josh at josh@techgeeks-united.com. We will really appreciate it and your name would go on the wall of supporters. We are working on special levels for people who donates such at higher ranking names, sneak peek at blocked off areas that are under constructions, the ability to Fly, and the ability to use creative mode.

Oh before I forget. If you would like to be able to play on our minecraft server, just add mc.techgeeks-united.com to your list of minecraft servers. That way, if the IP address changes on the server for some odd reason, all we would have to do is change it in the link and you guys will have to do nothing. Well… If the server is down, then you would have to wait for it to come back online. That is all, nothing else to it.

Anti-SOPA Movement: Blackout Day Jan18

January 13, 2012 in Government, Internet, protest, rights, SOPA

Thats right. you read the title correctly. We are still going against SOPA and any companies that supports it. As you already noticed, GoDaddy has ruined their reputation by supporting SOPA. When they started losing clients they with-drew thinking it would help when it didn’t. As of that. We are announcing that we will also be participating in the Blackout Wednesday on Jan 18th with the rest of the protesters. Don’t worry the link for the Stream will be posted on Twitter and Facebook for your convenience. When they time strikes, you will see this following image down below.

ATT To Flip The 4G LTE Switch On For 6 More Cities

November 19, 2011 in Uncategorized

While Verizon is still in the lead for most 4G LTE services, ATT is quickly gaining on verizon as they announce 6 more LTE services to be turned to On position on November 20, 2011. With already 9 cities in the 4G LTE competition of those which include Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio and a few more locations that came out back in October and early November.

For Sundays Launch ATT has announced that 6 cites will be getting the all go for 4G LTE. If you are in the area thats getting LTE then you are clear to get an LTE phone now. These areas includes Las Vegas, Oaklahoma, Kansas City, Indianapolis,Charlotte, and San Juan. If your city has been listed you can now buy an LTE phone and enjoy lightning fast LTE speeds in your area.

If you are not in the LTE market yet then don’t worry as there is still time. ATT has already announced to launch more LTE services to more Americans than expected by the end of 2011. If you are living in a majorly populated area then you will most likely be next.

If you are just getting caught up to the news and don’t know what 4G LTE means, 4G means 4th Generation and LTE means Long Term Evolution, hence the term 4G LTE. 4G LTE is up to 10X faster than 3G Currently to date there are 2 smartphones, 1 Tablet and 1 USB modem that runs on the 4G LTE system. That is to expand in the near future as more manufactures starts making 4G LTE compatible devices.

FEMA Nationwide Test

November 5, 2011 in Uncategorized

As we get closer to November 9, 2011, the government is working on preparing a nationwide test. Now what would this mean? Its nothing big. It just means you will see an Emergency Alert System or EAS Test for short time on your TV. If you are on the radio you will hear the message on there. The video below will explain the whole thing to you.

You may be asking “What can I do to prepare for it?” Well you would just need to do what everyone should have if you have not done so yet. Create and emergency preparedness plan. Nothing is gonna help you in an emergency situation then being prepared for one. Once you have your plan ready, you won’t be caught off guard when the emergency strikes.

What should the plan include?

1. It should include a list of numbers to call when an emergency strikes.

2. It should have meeting spots for if and when it happens.

3.In home kits should include:

  • Non perishable foods
  • At least 3 days worth of water per each person
  • flashlights
  • rechargeable emergency radio, battery operated or hand cranked (preferred)
  • first aid kit
  • extra batteries
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
4. The car kit should include all of the above plus listed below:
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate
  • Cash or traveler’s checks and change
  • Complete change of clothing including a long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. Consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.
  • Matches in a waterproof container
Now if you need to order an emergency kit, then you can order one at ready.gov for more information or from your local store. To keep your food safe during and after emergencies visit foodsafety.gov for more information. For a direct link to ordering from safe.gov please feel free to click here http://www.ready.gov/america/publications/allpubs.html. We hope you are ready for any emergencies as we are.

Get Outdoors!!!

November 2, 2011 in Uncategorized

Fall Foliage

How often do you find yourself just sitting around inside the house or just sitting on the computer all day doing absolutely nothing. Well Guess what. GET OUTDOORS!!!! The warm weather is just wrapping up for most of North America and well… the rest of the Northern Hemisphere.

For many states Fall Foliage is just almost at peak or past peak. One way to enjoy the changing colors is taking an Amtrak Train fro breath taking view of the many colors nature has in for us. Heck take the train from Chicago to Florida for a nice weekend vacation. The price for an average round trip from Chicago to Florida is roughly $150.

Winter is right around the corner for those who are along the Canadian boarder. As you have seen the North-East has already seen its early and record breaking snowfall. This is one of the few warnings that your warm season is coming to an end. The Great Lakes area has witness multiple Freezing Fogs in the last full week of October. I had to play with my window to get it to come down at a drive-thru at McDonalds cause it was frozen shut.

This is also an opportunity to get that last jog in that you have been promising yourself. In Michigan the last leaves falls 3 days before the snow falls. According to my yard, thats not far away since there is 3 trees left. And when the leaves falls, they fall all at once over night.

If you haven’t done so, Visit Niagara Falls before it becomes to cold, cause once it does, you wont wanna go due to a lot of ice. If you happen to already be in the snow covered area, go skiing, Snowmobiling, Cross-country ski. Do something to get fresh air. I go outside as much as I can to catch every last breath of each season as I can.

What do you do? Do you go outside or do you stay inside away from the weather? You tell me. Just post a comment below to let us know.

A Week with Windows Phone Mango

October 10, 2011 in Opinions

A post from my blog.

Microsoft released their mobile operating system Windows Phone Mango on September 27th with little talk from the tech community, even though it deserved it. In my opinion Windows Phone has been one of the most well-integrated phones you can buy. With the new Mango upgrade, this point gets even more proven.

While some of the new features to Mango are just catching up to iOS and Android, like voice control with more commands and in more of the apps, and a unified inbox, but most of the new features are things you’d expect from iOS and Android. One example is sharing photos. Instead of just having SMS, and email, Windows Phone allows you to share to Facebook out of the box. If you have any apps installed like Twitter or WordPress, they automatically get added to your Sharing list in the photo menu. Another example are the new features to Bing. Bing isn’t just a search engine anymore. With the new Scout feature, you can find places to eat and drink, see and do, shop and the highlights of an area you aren’t familiar with. Or find places you didn’t even know were there. You can also Music search with Bing. Like Shazam, you can place your phone to a speaker and Bing will search for the song. Finally, there is no need to download a QR scanner, it’s built-in to Bing. With Vision you can use your camera to search for barcodes, QR Codes, Microsoft Tags, books, CDs and DVDs, all by placing the object in front of your camera. The last example is the internet on Windows Phone. Internet Explorer is powered using HTML5, like IE 9. With hardware virtualization, it is the fastest mobile internet browser. And if you want to bookmark a webpage, it can be placed in the bookmarks menu, or have it pinned to the start screen.

I was hooked on Windows Phone even before the Mango upgrade. I liked how everything just worked together, and how the UI looked and performed. But what do you think about Windows Phone? Would you buy one? Leave a comment below.
